Without a doubt, New York has some of the greatest museums on the planet. Tourists so frequently attend the obvious ones, that they miss out on some incredible gems off the main path. Two of the strongest museums are The Studio Museum of Harlem and PS1 (once a public school turned Contemporary museum) located in Long Island City/Queens. For those not familiar, PS1 is now affiliated with MOMA.

Last Sunday, friends and I attended PS1′s latest exhibition: “Greater New York”. It showcases over 68 artists working or residing in New York. One of the artists on display was Hank Willis Thomas, a photographer whose work I not only admire for his eye, technique, aesthetic but who also leaves you thinking, contemplating and uncomfortable. It’s brilliant and it’s a treat. Look for his “Life Imitates Ads” series. Some of the other artists I was impressed with included: Deana Lawson, Adam Pendleton, Caleb Considine, Latoya Ruby Frazier, Leigh Ledare and Elisabeth Subrin. The artists’ mediums on display range from photography, oil painting, mixed media to video installations. The “Greater New York” show is on through October 18, 2010.

If your schedule allows, make sure to visit PS1 on a Sunday afternoon. I believe about 5 years ago, PS1 started “Warm Up” which combines your museum trip of spectacular contemporary art with loud house music, DJs, New Yorkers dressed their best, snacks and cocktails. How NY, right? It is a major source of fun and worth the trip to Long Island City.

Auntie’s Advice: Wherever your travels take you, seek out art in the outer boroughs, outer arrondisments, suburbs or neighboring towns.
